Introduction:
The SDG Goals provide a framework for all professional actions though it may seem broad. Design and planning professionals have increasingly found ways to deliver buildings and cities which reduce human impact on the ecological systems and improve well being of communities. However, under conditions of what we now call ‘climate emergency’ the actions needed are much more urgent. Massive decarbonisation in much shorter timeframes – like 2030 goals and 2040 and 2050 ambitions require a collaborative approach – industry, governments and communities to all take actions. At the same time we have our ecological systems to preserve and enhance and eventually provide healthy and liveable cities (and buildings). It is becoming increasingly evident that industry and corporation’s appetite to meet the target’s is improving and seemingly linked to their market perceptions as good citizens. Governments setting 2030 targets for emission reductions of 50% and above from 2005 baselines is showing promise. So how can we take a whole of life and a systems approach to delivering on a climate resilient and liveable habitat? This talk provides a balanced look at differing priorities for designers and planners to eventually provide better life on planet earth.
Lecturer:
Scientia Professor Deo Prasad AO FTSE has long-standing expertise in decarbonisation and sustainability. He led two key centres in this area – SOLARCH Group and then the CRC for Low Carbon Living as the CEO (~$30m). The CRC for Low Carbon Living has been the largest investment in built environment focussed research in Australia. Following this, he co-led the bid for the National Environmental Science Program’s ‘Sustainable Communities and Waste Hub’ now established at UNSW. This year he has co-led two successful bids – the NSW Decarbonisation Innovation Hub (~$30m) and the Australian Trailblazer for Recycling and Clean Energy (ATRaCE) (~$230m) – with both delivering massive decarbonisation while creating economic and capacity build outcomes.
Deo has supervised more than 100 masters students and more than 50 PhD completion – his students’ work places have varied from the ‘White House’ energy initiative in USA to the Energy Directorate in the European Union to many professors and other professionals in around 25 countries. Deo has published in excess of 300 key publications and is a regular keynote invited speaker at conferences globally.
