Paper of Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning given first prize in 2022 China Architectural Education / TSINGRUN Award Students' Paper Competition

The list of prize winners of 2022 China Architectural Education / TSINGRUN Award Students' Paper Competition was released on November 20, 2022. The paper titled "From Rural Land Cover to Ecological Coat -- A Study on Ecological Benefits and Urban and Rural Application of Straw Thermal Insulation Board in the Context of 'Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality'" submitted by the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning of Chongqing University wins the only first prize of the Undergraduate Group.

Introduction to the Competition

China Architectural Education / TSINGRUN Award Students' Paper Competition is a paper competition of the largest scale, widest coverage and highest academic standard in the field of architecture education in China, sponsored by China Architecture Publishing & Media Co., Ltd., co-sponsored by Tsingrun International Architecture Design Ltd., in an effort to promote the exchange of academic ideas among schools and departments of architecture nationwide, and improve the academic research level and paper writing ability of college students at all stages. The theme of this year's Competition is "Urban and Rural Regeneration in the Context of 'Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality'."

Process of the Competition

A total of 227 valid papers (including 100 papers of the Undergraduate Group and 127 papers of the Postgraduate and Doctor Group) were received. As the theme of this year's Competition is more about architectural technology, with a focus on the technical data and logic self-consistency, the entry barriers are high and the paper writing is not easy. Colleges and universities attached great importance to the Competition. Some of them even set up specialized competition teams. The most productive institution submitted a total of 29 papers. The paper reviews include preliminary review, second review and final review, carried out in an orderly manner. A panel of judges was established, made up of 20 experts and professors including deans of the "8 major architecture colleges and universities" of mainland China and responsible persons of the sponsor. The panel anonymously   carried out double-blind review and scoring of the papers in terms of technology and logic, and determined the ranking of the papers by the average score. Finally, 18 papers of the Undergraduate Group and 23 of the Postgraduate and Doctor Group (41 papers in total) were given prizes.

Introduction to the paper

The paper by Long Feifan and Zhang Huan, two students of 2018 from the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning, as supervised by Zhou Lu and Xu Jingfeng, teachers of the Faculty, won the only first prize of the Undergraduate Group despite the many excellent papers submitted by students of this discipline from well-known colleges and universities across China. It is the first top prize claimed by the undergraduate students of the Faculty since the first China Architectural Education / TSINGRUN Award Students' Paper Competition.

The award winning paper titled "From Rural Land Cover to Ecological Coat -- A Study on Ecological Benefits and Urban and Rural Application of Straw Thermal Insulation Board in the Context of 'Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality'" was based on the Architectural Physics Laboratory of the Faculty and the existing SRTP Project. It discusses the new type relation between rural and urban areas in the context of "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality", taking into account the disciplinary vision of architecture and the straw insulation board as a green product. Through quantitative calculation, the advantages of carbon emission in the whole life cycle of straw insulation board were explained, and the possibility of its application in urban and rural areas was qualitatively discussed, so as to demonstrate the great ecological benefits and application potential of straw insulation board. This paper provides a new path for building a cycle resonant urban and rural ecological community in the context of "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality".

The prize came after the great efforts made by the Faculty in the study of urban and rural overall development in recent years. It showed the thoughts and opinions of the Faculty's teachers and students on urban and rural regeneration in the context of "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality", and also confirmed the effectiveness of the Faculty in cultivating the academic writing literacy and scientific research innovation ability of undergraduate students.
