Department of Building Technology

The Department of Building Technology of the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning is a comprehensive department that takes science of building technology in mountainous areas as its main research objects. Drawing on the regional characteristics and disciplinary diversity of the Faculty, the Department of Building Technology takes a development road that features a combination of regional and international development, and is devoted to providing technical support for development and innovation of construction of mountainous towns. The Science of Building Technology in Mountainous Areas is an integrated discipline established on the basis of architectural physics and architectural construction technology. The lab of the Department is under the Key Laboratory of New Technology for Construction of Cities in Mountain Area, which is a key lab under the Ministry of Education.

In the past 50 years since its establishment, the Department has gathered rich experience in scientific research of healthy building and ecological building design theory in mountainous area, building thermal insulation and cooling design theory in southern China, theoretical calculation method of heat and moisture transfer of enclosure structure, natural daylighting/health lighting/urban lighting in mountainous area, and building construction technology theory and method for mountainous area, as guided by Prof. Chen Qigao, Prof. Yang Guangxuan, Prof. Xie De'an, Prof. Liu Jianrong and Prof. Li Biyu. For instance, in the area of building thermal engineering, the Department has developed the periodic heat transfer theory of enclosure structure, the calculation theory of room thermal radiation heat transfer and thermal insulation technology, revealed the moisture-proof technology of "sweat reduction effect" of air layer in enclosure structure, and established the generalized Weber-Fischer law. Its academic research is at the leading level nationwide. In the area of architectural optics, the Department has reached the domestic leading and international advanced level in the theory and observation of light climate. In the area of photometry, the Department has established the expression of spectral luminous efficiency and the maximum spectral luminous efficiency of intermediate vision. In the area of natural daylighting, the Department has identified the sky brightness distribution characteristics and calculation method of the maximum sky brightness. In the area of architectural lighting, the research on road lighting, tunnel lighting and health lighting of the Department is at the leading level in China. In areas such as building acoustics, building structure and building disaster prevention, the Department has made tremendous exploring effort in research of urban noise control, new structure and fire prevention of high-rise buildings, and has produced significant social and economic benefits. Its research findings have had an important influence on the building technology area of China.

In recent years, the Department of Building Technology has undertaken a total of 21 national-level scientific research projects and provincial and ministerial-level scientific research projects, among which there are projects under the National Science and Technology Support Program, and general projects/youth projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation, and has been granted tends of national patents. It has won 5 prizes, including the second prize for progress in science and technology issued by the Ministry of Education, the second prize for progress in science and technology of Chongqing, and the third prize for progress in science and technology of Chongqing; and nearly 20 important industrial awards, including IES Illumination Award, the Lighting Award ofChina Illuminating Engineering Society (first, second and third prizes), and the Perspective 40 Under 40 Awards. In recent years, the Department has published 118 SSCI/SCI-indexed, EI-indexed, authoritative and high-standard papers and hundreds of other papers.

As for teaching reform, the Department of Building Technology has been making unremitting efforts to take over from the past and set a new course for the future. In the past 30 years, the building technology discipline has made tremendous exploring effort in teaching reform. The Department has adopted a "4-leading" technical strategy that features leading-level textbooks, teaching content, teaching methods and teaching experiment facilities. It has set up an open and sustainable framework mode for building technology education that is domestically leading and internationally advanced. Distinct characteristics have been formed in areas including renewal of teaching contents, and reform of teaching methods and means. Achievements made by the Department in teaching reform include: Teachers of the Department have acted as editors in chief of ore than 10 textbooks, among which the textbook Building Construction was granted the national second prize for excellent textbooks. It has established 3 national excellent courses (and also excellent courses of Chongqing Municipality), 1 course named in the list of National Excellent Shared Courses, and 3 courses named in the list of Excellent Shared Courses of Chongqing Municipality. The Department has completed 2 provincial and ministerial-level teaching reform projects, and has won a number of awards including 2 national award for excellent teaching achievement, 2 provincial and ministerial awards for excellent teaching achievement, and 2 national outstanding textbook awards. The Department has one famous teacher of Chongqing, and the teaching team of the building technology series courses has been appraised as a national teaching team and a municipal teaching team. It has founded 1 key lab under the Ministry of Education and 1 municipal key lab, and has guided students to win a number of awards and prizes in international and domestic design competitions. It has established its leading position in the same-type courses in universities and colleges nationwide, and is playing a demonstrating role, with its remarkable achievements made in teaching reform.

The Department of Building Technology has made outstanding achievements in teaching and scientific research. Members of the team have won various individual honors and awards. For instance, Prof. Li Biyu has won the title of "Chongqing Municipal Famous Teacher" (issued by Chongqing Municipal People's Government in 2006). In 2003, Prof. Li Biyu was commended by Chongqing University and was granted a Citation for Great Merit. In addition, Prof. Li Biyu was given the architecture education award in the 5th and 6th Selections of Architecture Society of China. In 2012, Prof. Zhou Tiejun won the title of Advanced Worker of Shapingba District, Chongqing. In 2014, Prof. Yan Yonghong was selected as a specially appointed professor under the "Bayu Scholar Program". Prof. Li Biyu, Prof. Yan Yonghong and Prof. Qin Lin were given the outstanding scientific researcher/teacher award of "Tang Lixin Education Development Foundation" of Chongqing University. In 2017, the "healthy lighting" innovation team (the innovation team of colleges and universities in Chongqing, 2016) was commended by Chongqing University and awarded a Citation for Collective Merit.

The building technology discipline has a long history. In the 1960s, the first undergraduates of architectural physics of China graduated from the Faculty. In 1965, the architectural physics discipline started to enroll postgraduate students. In 1986, the science of building technology discipline became the first to establish a doctoral program in China, and made contributions to development of China's building technology discipline. Among graduates of the Faculty, there are a number of talents who have made significant contributions to China's building technology, including Academician Liu Jiaping. In April 2010, the Faculty set up the Department of Building Technology with architectural physics, building construction technology and digital technology as the main research areas, and established the disciplinary architecture that focused on building environment control theory and method for mountainous area, building structure technology theory and method for mountainous area, mountainous city and building safety design theory and method, and mountainous city and building digital design and technology. Development goal of the Department of Building Technology is to take root in west China, and follow the development road that features a combination of regional and international elements while retaining the traditional characteristics of mountainous areas, and ultimately provide innovative theoretical and technical support for development and construction of mountainous towns.

The Department of Building Technology now has 22 full-time teachers, among which there are 6 professors, 8 doctoral supervisors, 12 associate professors and 11 master supervisors. Totally 86% of the teachers hold a title of a senior professional post. Since its founding, the Department of Building Technology has been making efforts to build on past achievements and strive for new progress in teaching and scientific research. By actively carrying out international and domestic scientific research and teaching exchange activities and exploring new research areas, the Department has gathered rich experience in scientific research and made considerable scientific research achievement. It has gained remarkable academic influence at home and abroad.
