The Department of Horticulture of Chongqing University was founded by Li Ju in 1932. In 1937, the discipline Architecture was established jointly by Huang Jiahua, Xia Changshi and other scholars. The teachers of different departments interacted frequently. Later, professors including Wu Guanzhong and Xu Beihong joined in the discipline. As a result, the discipline Landscape Architecture of Chongqing University featured a combination of engineering, agriculture and arts and fusion of international horizon and local elements soon after it was established. In 1952, the Department went through institutional adjustment and the Urban Landscaping Group was established. In 1981, the Group started to admit postgraduate students in Landscape Architecture. In 1987, it started to admit undergraduate students in Landscape Architecture. In 2005, it was approved as one of the first postgraduate programs in China. In 2008, Landscape Architecture was appraised as the national second-level key discipline. In 2011, it was approved as one of the first first-level doctoral programs. In 2014, it was approved as a postdoctoral research station. In 2018, it was included in the "Double-First-Rate " Construction Program as a key discipline group. In 2019, it was approved as one of the first national first-rate disciplines of China, and became a discipline that cultivates high-level talents.
Sub-discipline and advantageous characteristics
This Discipline has a complete education system that covers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs and postdoctoral research station. Sub-disciplines that have already been established include Landscape Planning and Resource Protection, Gardens and Landscape Design, History and Theory of Landscape Architecture, Ecological Restoration and Plant Application. In the past decades, the Discipline has been making enormous efforts to study mountain landscape while attaching importance to patriotism, international horizon and excellent academic tradition, and respond to the major strategic need of the country. It has showed distinct advantages and characteristics.
1) Theory and practice of innovative mountain landscape
The Discipline has been seeking for innovative theoretical methods and key technologies of mountain landscape, and playing a leading role in the development of rural and urban mountain landscape. Besides, it has been making active efforts to expedite technical transformation and implementation. The practical cases extend to various dimensions and levels and are playing a significant demonstration role.
2) Intersection and integration of systematic academic system
Based on the discipline group of architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture, and drawing on comprehensive disciplinary resources of the "Double-First-Rate" Construction Program, the Discipline has made significant achievements in areas including mountain landscape design and ecological restoration of fluctuating zone by giving full play to its coordinated development characteristics.
3) Intensive cultivation and expansion of open teaching research
The Discipline has been actively responding to the national strategy and has established an interactive system of enterprise-university-research that "responds dynamically to major strategy". It has been promoting disciplinary exchange at home and abroad, and building a multi-dimension and open teaching and research pattern through different approaches.
Cultivation objectives and source of students
Sticking to the cultivation concept that stresses "extensive coverage, solid foundation and comprehensive development", the Discipline is dedicated to cultivating innovation-oriented pioneering talents that are patriotic and equipped with the frontier knowledge and advanced technology of the Discipline. It boasts desirable sources of undergraduate and postgraduate students and doctoral candidates. The average admission score of undergraduate students is always more than 100 points above the enrollment mark of first-tier universities of the origin of students. The average enrollment ratio of postgraduate students in the past 5 years was 6:1. The students from universities under the "Double-First-Rate" Construction Program, "985 Project" and "211 Project" accounted for a maximum of more than 85.7% of the total, with an average of above 50%. The recommended postgraduate students from universities under the "Double-First-Rate" Construction Program, "985 Project" and "211 Project" accounted for a maximum of more than 82.8% of the total, with an average of above 46.1%. Most of the doctoral candidates are from well-known universities at home and abroad. Those from the Northeast Forestry University, South China University of Technology, and top 1‰ universities among QS World University Rankings account for 56%.
Influence at home and abroad
The Discipline is posing a great influence at home and abroad. The engineering science to which the discipline belongs has always been a top 1‰ ESI discipline in the world. In recent 5 years, representatives of the Discipline have delivered more than 50 keynote speeches at domestic and international academic conferences, and 300 speeches at parallel sessions. A total of 13 teachers take an additional post at international academic institutions and major journals at home and abroad.
